Civil Marriage

Civil Marriage in the UAE

Also called a court marriage, because the ceremony takes place at the court. Whether you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the Emirates — or are arriving for the occasion — we make it straightforward and calm, from the first document to a certificate that travels.

Two Emirates. One Recognised Marriage.

Both routes end in the same place — an official UAE marriage certificate. What changes is how long you wait for the appointment, how easily one can be found, and how the day itself feels. Most of the couples we marry live in Dubai; both courts are a comfortable drive away, and which one suits you depends on your timing and on where the certificate has to be accepted, not on the emirate you live in.

Who Is This For

Who a Court Marriage in the UAE Is For

Civil marriage — court marriage, in the phrase most couples use — is the UAE's secular marriage pathway, available to eligible couples under the applicable regulations. Where an Islamic marriage is required or preferred, we also arrange the appropriate pathway.

  • International Couples

Two nationalities, one ceremony. Neither of you needs to be a UAE citizen, and neither of you needs the other one’s passport.

  • Residents & Expats

Already living in the Emirates. Marry where your life is, instead of flying home for an appointment and a stack of paperwork.

  • Destination Couples

Arriving for the occasion. A short stay is enough once the documents have been prepared and legalised in advance.

  • Couples on a Deadline

A visa window, a family trip, a date that will not move. Abu Dhabi Express completes in one to two working days.

  • Married Before

A previous marriage is no obstacle. We tell you which decree or certificate has to be legalised, and how much time that adds.

  • Recognition Abroad

A certificate that has to work in another country. We carry it through MOFA attestation and embassy legalisation where your country requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Couples Ask Before They Book

01 What is the difference between a civil marriage and a court marriage?
There is none. They are two names for the same thing — the UAE’s secular marriage pathway, conducted at the court, which is where the second name comes from. You will see both used interchangeably, including by the authorities. We say civil marriage on this site, and mean exactly what you mean when you say court marriage.
02 Can we have a court marriage in Dubai?
We arrange court marriages in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah, and most of the couples we marry live in Dubai. Those two emirates are where the routes we can stand behind are: Abu Dhabi for the strongest international recognition, Ras Al Khaimah for the shortest wait. Both are a comfortable drive from Dubai, and living there does not change which of them is open to you. Which one suits you depends on your timing and on where the certificate has to be accepted — we work that out with you before anything is booked. Compare both emirates Marrying to a fixed date
03 Is a civil marriage in the UAE legally valid?
Yes. A civil marriage conducted at the competent UAE court is an official marriage, registered with the authorities and issued as a government marriage certificate.
04 Which documents are required?
Typically passports and proof of marital status, with additional legalised or translated documents depending on your nationality. We confirm the exact list for your two passports before anything is booked, so nothing is discovered late.
05 How long does the process take?
It depends far more on the emirate than on the paperwork. A regular appointment in Abu Dhabi is currently booking about three months ahead; in Ras Al Khaimah it is about three weeks. Express shortens the wait to one to two working days in Abu Dhabi and seven in Ras Al Khaimah. We tell you the current wait for your dates before you book anything around it. The express routes in detail
06 Can we apply if we are in different countries?
The preparation can be handled remotely from anywhere — documents, translations, legalisation and booking. Both partners then attend the appointment in person. If neither of you can travel, an online marriage may be the better route, and we will say so. Read about online marriage
07 Is the certificate recognised worldwide?
In most cases yes, subject to the requirements of the country where you intend to use it. It depends on your home country whether it accepts the certificate directly once MOFA has attested it, or whether it wants its own embassy in the UAE to legalise it as well — we take it through whichever of those it needs. Attestation and embassy legalisation
08 Can we get married on the same day?
Same-day appointments are sometimes possible in Abu Dhabi where documents are already prepared and legalised. We will tell you honestly in the consultation whether your case allows it rather than let you book travel around a maybe.
