Where things stand today

This site sets four things whichever way you answer, and all four are strictly necessary. None of them is used to measure you, profile you or advertise to you.

Three more depend on your answer, and on where you are. One of them is Google Analytics, counting visits so we can see which pages are read and where people stop. The other two record which advertisement brought you here, so we can tell whether our advertising is worth continuing.

• Reading from the EEA or the UK? Google's script loads, but it is told before it runs that it may not store anything or identify you — so no cookie is written and no identifier is sent until you say yes. Reject the banner, or simply ignore it, and it stays that way. What Google receives in the meantime is the bare fact that a page was opened, with nothing attached that could be traced back to you.
• Reading from anywhere else? They start when you open the first page, and the banner is a notice with an off switch rather than a request for permission. We would rather say that plainly than let you find the cookies yourself.

We work out which of the two applies from your approximate country and your browser's time zone, and we remember the answer in the bes_region cookie listed below. It holds one of two words. It does not record where you are.

Either way the switch works, and works immediately. Use the banner, or Cookie settings in the footer of any page, and Google is told to stop from that moment. One honest caveat if it had already started: this stops the cookie being used, it does not reach into your browser and delete a _ga that was already written. Clearing it is a browser setting, and it expires on its own.

Advertising measurement is running as of 31 August 2026. We advertise on Google, and when someone arrives from one of those advertisements we record which one it was, so we can tell whether the advertising is worth continuing. If you then send us an enquiry, a one-way scrambled form of the email address and phone number you entered is sent to Google so it can match the enquiry to the click — Google never receives them in readable form, and we never send your name, your message or anything else from the form. Turning Advertising off stops all of it. We do not yet show advertisements to people who have already visited; the switch covers that too, for when we do.

One thing runs in both cases, and belongs on this page even though it sets no cookie: a page-view counter called Umami. It writes nothing to your device — no cookie, no stored identifier — which is why it is absent from the table below, why it does not wait for consent anywhere, and why the off switch does not govern it. It also means it cannot recognise you on a later visit. It is described in full in our privacy policy.

The banner is ours, built into this site. We did not want to load a consent vendor's script in order to tell you about other people's scripts.

What a cookie is, briefly

A small file a website asks your browser to keep, so that something can be remembered between one page and the next. Some are unavoidable — they hold the fact that you signed in, or that you already passed a security check. Others exist to count visitors or to follow them between sites. The difference matters far more than the technology does.

Cookies in use now

The four marked strictly necessary are set whichever way you answer the banner. Anything marked Analytics or Marketing depends on your answer: in the EEA and the UK it is not created until you agree, and everywhere else it is set unless you switch that category off. Either way, switching off stops it being used immediately; the file itself sits in your browser until it expires or until you clear your cookies, which you can do at any time from your browser settings.

Cookies that will be set later

Nothing in this list is set on the site today, and agreeing to the category it belongs to will not create it — the tool that would write it is not installed. It is listed so that you can see in advance exactly what will change if we do switch it on.

What is not here

Some things a visitor might reasonably expect are deliberately absent, so it is worth naming them:

• No font provider. Our typefaces are served from this site, not from Google Fonts, so no request leaves your browser for them.
• No social media pixels. We link to Instagram and WhatsApp; we do not embed them, and neither is told that you were here unless you click through.
• No embedded video or maps. Nothing on this site loads a third-party player or map frame.

Turning them off

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies — in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge it sits under Settings, then Privacy. Blocking the strictly necessary ones will not break the pages you are reading, but it will make the partner onboarding page ask for its password every time, it may make a form refuse a valid submission because the security check can no longer be remembered, and the banner will reappear on every visit because your choice cannot be stored — which also means a decision about measurement cannot be remembered between visits, and that we will have to work out which consent rules apply to you again each time.

You can also change your mind at any time from Cookie settings in the footer of every page — no hunting through browser menus, and the refusal is one click, exactly like the acceptance beside it.
