Marriage Certificate Attestation

Before a UAE marriage certificate is used abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests it. We arrange that for certificates from our own weddings and for those issued without us, by a UAE court or a church.

UAE Marriage Certificate Attestation — Whoever Married You

Marriage certificate attestation in the UAE is done by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MOFA, for every emirate. It confirms the signatures and seals on a UAE certificate, the first step before the certificate is used abroad. We arrange it after a wedding we prepared with you, and for a certificate you already hold from a UAE court or a church.

  • A couple seen from behind walk out through an open arched wooden door into warm light, the bride in an ivory satin gown carrying a cream folder

    Married With Us

Attestation is part of what follows the ceremony. We settle the destination country in the consultation, so the application can go in once the certificate is issued.

    • Destination country agreed before the wedding
    • Application filed once the certificate is issued
    • Embassy step and translations where needed
    • Sent on to you if you have already left
  • A flat cream linen document wallet tied with an ivory ribbon on an oak breakfast table, two gold wedding bands in a small ceramic dish beside it, two coffee cups and a folded napkin

    Already Married

A certificate you already hold can come to us too: from the Abu Dhabi court without us, from another UAE court, or from a church in the Emirates. Some need a step with their issuing authority before MOFA.

    • Marriage certificates issued in the UAE
    • Checked before anything is filed
    • Embassy step where your country asks for it
    • Sent on to you wherever you are

Certificates issued outside the UAE are not part of this service. They are legalised in the country that issued them and by the UAE embassy there, under MOFA’s rules for documents issued abroad.

Still planning the wedding itself? The civil marriage routes we arrange

MOFA’s system decides from the issuing authority and the document type whether a certificate is attested digitally or by courier. Certificates from the Abu Dhabi court mostly go digitally, unless the embassy where you register the marriage asks for a printed copy.

Before the Application

What Does MOFA Need to Attest a Marriage Certificate?

MOFA needs the original certificate, the authority that issued it and the country where it will be used. A digital certificate with a QR code or reference number is uploaded and attested online. A paper one goes through an approved courier, unlaminated and in Arabic or English or with a certified translation. Applications are made with UAE PASS and cannot be changed once submitted.

  • The Original

A digital certificate as the issuing authority’s own PDF, never a scan or a photograph. A paper certificate as the original, and not laminated.

  • The Issuing Authority

MOFA’s system sets the route from the authority that issued the certificate and the type of document. Digital or courier cannot be chosen.

  • The Destination Country

Named in the application and fixed from then on. It decides whether an attestation by a UAE embassy is included in the same service.

  • The Language

Arabic or English, or with a legally certified translation. A certificate from the Abu Dhabi court already carries both languages.

  • One Route per Application

Up to five documents go into one application, all on the same route. A rejected application cannot be reopened, so a new one is filed.

  • The Embassy Step

Some countries also want their own embassy in the UAE to legalise the certificate. Some embassies take the papers from us, others accept them only from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Couples Ask About Attesting a UAE Marriage Certificate

MOFA’s published service details, as read in October 2026.

01 Can you attest our marriage certificate if we married without you?
Yes. We arrange MOFA attestation for marriage certificates issued in the UAE. Yours may come from the Abu Dhabi court, where you married on your own, or from another UAE court, such as the courts in Dubai or a Sharia court. A certificate from a church in the Emirates can be attested too. For each one we confirm first whether it needs a step before MOFA. The ways to marry in the UAE that we arrange
02 How long does MOFA take to attest a marriage certificate?
We plan two to three working days for the ministry’s step, whether the certificate goes digitally or by courier. The ministry publishes shorter times for digital attestation, but in our experience they vary. Where your country also wants its embassy in the UAE to legalise the certificate, that step runs on the embassy’s own timetable, and we do not quote it for them. MOFA’s attestation service and its own timings
03 Why does MOFA ask where the certificate will be used?
Because the destination country decides how the attestation is completed. It determines whether digital attestation is available, and whether the service ends with the ministry or continues to the UAE embassy responsible for that country. The country cannot be changed once the application is in, so we settle it with you first, together with what that country’s own authorities ask for. Legalisation at your embassy, and recognition at home
04 Do we need to be in the UAE for the attestation?
Not for the ministry’s step: a digital certificate is uploaded, and a paper original can be sent to us from abroad for the approved courier. Where your country also wants its embassy in the UAE to legalise the certificate, it depends on that embassy. Some accept the papers from us on your behalf, others only from you, and we find out which before you plan your stay.
05 Does an attested certificate still need a translation?
Often, at the other end. MOFA attests a certificate in Arabic or English, and one from the Abu Dhabi court carries both. The authority at home may still want a certified translation into its own language, German for a registry in Germany, for example. Which translation it accepts, and from whom, is its decision, so we check with that authority before anything is translated.
06 What does it cost to attest a marriage certificate?
MOFA charges a fee for each document, and its total depends on how many documents go in and whether the service includes an embassy attestation. A translation or a fee at your embassy comes on top. Before anything is submitted, we set out MOFA’s fee, the embassy and translation costs we know of, and our own price.
07 Is marriage certificate attestation different in Dubai and in Abu Dhabi?
At the ministry, no: MOFA attests marriage certificates from every emirate through one federal service. What differs is the authority that issued yours, a court in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or another emirate, or a church. It decides whether MOFA attests digitally or by courier, and whether another authority certifies the certificate first. A certificate from the Abu Dhabi court goes to MOFA directly.
